Moving Tips

We understand that moving can be extremely difficult, which is why we have provided some moving tips below.

Things to make the preparation for your move much easier

There are many ways that you can prepare for you move to make moving day easier. From beginning to pack all of your rooms into boxes to using food in the freezer, there are a number of things you can do.

Slowly packing your house up room by room

Taking the time to pack all of your belongings is one of our most important moving tips. If you pack your home in a rush a few days before you move, you’re more likely to forget where things are. This is why it is more sensible to pack a box from each room per day, taking your time. You may also find that packing this way is much less stressful and you can keep track of where things are.

Using up food in your fridge and freezer

It is a good idea to try and use all of the remaining food you have in your fridge and freezer before you move. This will allow you to defrost your appliances without having to worry how to store refrigerated and frozen goods. Furthermore, it will save you money, as it means that you will not have to throw away lots of food.

Packing items properly

When packing your household items, especially fragile ones, it is crucial to ensure they are wrapped and packed properly. If you do not have packing materials such as bubble wrap, wrapping paper, etc., you can use things such as clothing, pillows, newspaper and similar materials to wrap your goods in. This will prevent breakages, and can allow you to transport your soft furnishings and clothes in the same boxes, saving space and boxes.

Moving tips

Packing boxes properly

While it can be tempting to try and cram as much in a box as possible, it’s not worth the later hassle. Although you may think that you’d be saving space and using fewer boxes, this may result in the boxes splitting. This can be dangerous if you have sentimental or fragile items within these boxes. You also don’t want boxes to split in case they contain something heavy, which can land on the toes of whoever is carrying it.

Make a key for organising boxes and rooms

In order for your moving day to go as efficiently as possible, create a key, including different colours for the different rooms in your house. This way, you can label each box with a different colour, and both you and the moving team will know where to put the boxes in your new home. This can save lots of time and confusion, as well as moving boxes around and getting frustrated.

Declutter as you go along

Moving home can be the chance you need to declutter your home. You may accumulate a number of items over the years which you have forgotten about until it comes to packing. When deciding what you wish to take with you to your new home, it may be sensible to create a few separate piles. They may consist of a ‘keep’ pile, a ‘throw away’ pile, and an ‘unsure’ pile. Of course, it is completely up to you on what you wish to keep and throw away, and you can even donate some items to charity or friends and family. We recommend decluttering as much as possible, so that you can have much more space in your new home. Decluttering will also mean that you don’t have to pack and move as many things.

Pack a big bag or a box to keep with you during your move

It is a good idea to pack a bag or a box to keep with you during your move. This can also be known as a ‘first-night box’, and can include items such as a kettle, pillows, food, and anything to make your first night at home comfortable. This can be a life-saver, as it can take a few days to unpack everything else, and you want to relax on your first night. Don’t forget to include things such as medication, spare clothes, and anything else that you may need, like toilet roll etc.
